Funding sources for collaborative research:
The indigenous business sector can potentially benefit from research & innovation supports from Enterprise Ireland, including; Innovation Vouchers (also available in Northern Ireland), and Innovation Partnerships.
Enterprise Ireland's Industry-Led Research Programme supports medium-term 'shared agenda' research activity among companies who could not afford to fund such research on their own. Projects generally take between 9 months and 2 years to complete and the research is contracted out to a publicly-funded research institution with significant funding available from Enterprise Ireland.
Competence Centres are collaborative entities established and led by industry that are resourced by highly-qualified researchers associated with research institutions who are empowered to undertake market focussed strategic R&D for the benefit of industry. They differ from the Industry-Led Research Projects in many ways, including the fact that the research agenda has a longer-term focus. The objective of the Competence Centre initiative is to achieve competitive advantage for industry in Ireland by accessing the innovative capacity of the research community.
A range of services and incentives, including funding and grants, are available to those considering foreign direct investment in Ireland. These are offered by IDA Ireland, Ireland’s inward investment promotion agency.
At the European Community level, the European Union possesses a number of significant funding instruments to support research and innovation, more details here.
